I know I'm a decade behind the times but I've never bought an mp3 player, and now I want to.

I don't care much about features. I just want a folder structure where I can select a folder and listen to it.

I download free music, so iTunes and the like are unimportant to me. Hooking up to my computer to get the songs (just a plain old file transfer) is all I want.

I'd like the cheapest, most stable thing that does this, with a decent amount of storage.

Other things that would perk my interest, but aren't 'make or break' are the ability to play random tracks, and anything cool it does with Amarok or Rhythmbox.

So I'd like to ask the Ubuntu community, what do you use and how do you like it?
Thanks for any opinions! (^_^)/

I have a 5th generation 80GB iPod Video and I installed Rockbox on it, hich makes it into a nice OGG/FLAC/MP3/AAC/etc. player. It can play random tracks, but it doesn't do direct syncing.

They made an 80GB 5th Gen? My 5th Gen is only 30GB.

Forget ipods you can't get better than a Sony-NWZ-S639FB (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-NWZ-S639FB-Video-Player-Tuner/dp/B001FB56PC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1232903369&sr=8-1), I've got one it's a little gem and drag & drop, no other software required, perfect for Linux.;)

Define reasonable amount of space.

If you mean 2 Gigs as reasonable, I would recommend the sandisk e200, or another flash player.
