The sound in my computer is very drawn out and drags a lot. So does the video. It seems to lag quite a bit.

When I play some sound file which has some sentences or words, it seems as if a very very slow reader is reading it. For example : if a file has someone saying "My name" it sounds like mmmmmyyyyy ...... nnnnnaaaaammmmmmeeee........
For other sound files i can't even make out what the actual sound is.
The login sound is extremely drawn out. I didn't even know it was supposed to be drums.

I have ubuntu 8.10 (intrepid) on a Compaq Presario CQ 40-108Tu laptop.
The sound driver is Playback:ALSA PCM on front:0 (STAC92xx Analog) via DMA according to the Pulseaudio device chooser.
Earlier I was getting no sound at all but after following the comprehensive sound solutions guide I am getting sound but really patchy stuff.

Can anybody help with this? Thanks.
