I'm facing an annoying problem which I haven't been able to resolve and so it looks like I'm going to have to re-install Ubuntu. The thread is here:

if anyone wants to help me- I have drawn a blank so far.
I have been able to backup my previous home folder onto a separate HDD which brings me to my question (I'm sorry if it is an obviously stupid one- I am still relatively new to the world of Linux and Ubuntu in particular).
If I re-install Ubuntu and then copy the contents of my previous home folder to the new one, will it restore the state of my previous install? I guess it is unlikely to work but I am really looking for some way to ease the pain of starting from scratch again!!
