UPDATE: Got it to work

see second post below

I can't get my screen resolution above 800x600. I've searched here, and I installed the nvidia legacy drivers, and nvidia x server settings, but couldn't find the nvidia-xconfig it said to run (says I'm not using the nvidia x driver)

I'm about out of ideas, here's a few things that some have asked for.

Note, I just hooked up a new flat screen AOC 22in, not a 17 in that it still thinks is there. When I try to use the screen resolution tool, it comes up with unknown inside a white box and detect displays does nothing. The monitor works ok on windows xp and detects all of its resolutions.

GOT IT!!!!

I eventually figured it out (by trial and error) until I got to the boot up x fix screen and did a manual configuration.

In the thread on 800x600 is ruining my ubuntu experience, I posted the details on how I got it to work.
