Ubuntu - Firal Countdown

I have a Satelite S1000, Ubuntu 8.10 , it has a 14GB HDD and 512mb , 1.13gz celeron .After the machine tells you to restart and eject the cd. the machine boots, play welcome sounds, an orange screen, (before hand asking for your username and password) and just hangs for ages and does nothing, any ideas ?

restart machine and choose Recovery Mode to see what errors come on your screen.

your machine seems to crash - i would try xubuntu, it's less demanding
