View Full Version : [ubuntu] "Video mode not supported" HIS Radeon HD 2600 XT

I originally posted on this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1036031), but decided to make a new thread here, since I might get some help sooner here.

i installed Ubuntu 8.10 a couple of days ago, and I'm pretty much a complete linux noob, but I'm picking up a few things.

anyway, I have the HIS Radeon HD 2600 XT 512MB card and I'm running a 64-bit system, and I installed proprietary linux drivers (first 32-bit then 64-bit), and I'm able to run most programs fine and my visual effects are on Extra without a problem. However I installed a couple of games like Nexuiz and Alien Arena and when I run them, my monitor displays the "Video Mode not supported" message, but background sound still works, and the only thing I can do restart through the ctrl-alt-F1 console.

i tried downloading and installing drivers through EnvyNg after ATI drivers failed me, and it didn't work. I know that 3d graphics work, because i ran that 3d gears test thing (sorry, forgot what it was called, maybe glgears) and it didn't freeze or have any artifacts. Can someone please help, because I have no idea what the problem is.

If you get the issues only with those particular applications, then the problem maybe with the applications themselves or even with the driver. Can you post the all the Xorg.*.log(* stands for a number) in the /var/log/ folder here?

I personally think it's the driver, but here's Xorg.0.log. There are also Xorg.0.log.old and Xorg.failsafe.log . I can post them if needed.

Also I found out that video play back flickers black very often. Don't know if that's helpful.

shameless self bump.

I think it might be a refresh rate problem. Once a full screen app launches, it launches under an unsupported refresh rate, but I don't know how to change that. Help?

I've had that problem myself, and I fixed it by messing around with the application's settings. But before going there, it does seem to be something strange with the driver. Did you try using the open source ATi driver before?

No I honestly didn't even know that there was an open source ATI driver. I'm going to try it out, but it doesn't look like it supports R600 cards like 2600 XT (at least it doesn't mention it), but I'll see how far I can get, thanks!

(woop nevermind, R600 is supported, just had to look on another site)

I'm editing xorg.conf to install the open source ati driver, and something doesn't really look right to me. For example I sometimes have 2 consecutive Sections:

ok, so I installed the ati open source driver (I tried out radeohd driver before this, but decided to switch to ati, since as far as I understand it chooses the best installed open source driver for me anyways) and it solved a video play back flicker problem, however there is a full screen video slowdown in different players (VLC and Rhythmbox). Launching full screen 3d games (I reinstalled Nexuiz and Alien Arena) doesn't show the "Video mode not supported" message any more, but it doesn't launch it either, which I guess is better than crashing. Also, Visual Effects can't be enabled, and only the ATI/AMD proprietary FGLRX driver shows up in Hardware Drivers, when I'm supposed to have 4 others (vesa, ati, radeon, radeonhd).

In my xorg.conf file I have these options under "Device"

Sorry, I forgot about the fact that R600 and R700 still doesn't have 3D support under the open source drivers.

About the 3D problem, as I do not use ATi at all, it really is a shot in the dark for me, with the fglrx driver, an even worse case. The only thing I can suggest is to try asking the Xorg developers, but that is a very long shot since fglrx is not part of the Xorg project as it is not open source, but if you wish to give it a try, I can give you the necessary details.

yeah, idk I'm just gonna wait until ati comes out with a fix for this, because supposedly they've been making a lot of progress with linux compatibility since amd bought ati. I mean everything works fine including 3d desktop, except for full screen 3d programs and the video playback was flickery. Changing video output from default to X11 in VLC fixed the flicker problem. Thanks a lot PmDematagoda, you actually helped me get a much better understanding of ubuntu, because I didn't even know about open source drivers.
