Just got an second hand laptop, want to put just Ubuntu on it - no Windows at all!

I have a 40GB HDD for it, which I wiping totally clean with DBAN.

Can anyone give me an absolute novices guide to the partitions I'll want to do with this?

I've done it more than once but always seem to get a bit wrong, so can someone give me a step by step partition how to!?

Cheers!

if you want to install only Ubuntu on it then 1 partition could do..otherwise you can set up a 10 GB partition for the ubuntu install, 1 GB swap, and the rest for data etc..this can all be done from the Ubuntu installation GUI

this howto gave me all i needed to know when I started

Cheers for the quick reply, so if I was being lazy a single partition of 40gb (or just a bit less) would be fine?

You'll need a swap partition as well. But since you are going to use the whole disk for Ubuntu you can just use the automatic partitioning option and let the installer do everything for you. :)
