Multi Monitors... i have 12...

Hey,
thinking about switching over to ubuntu from windows. I have 12 monitors and i was wondering if this is going to cause a problem with ubuntu. Any help would be much appreciated

Let me get this straight 12 monitors connected to one workstation?! If so, althrough I find it highly unlikely, most of the cases you won't have too many problems. If they are spanned across different machines, you will have to install Distributed Multihead X.

i'm a derivatives trader, so i have a multi monitor computer with 12 monitors pluged into my system. I was wondering if ubuntu can support this many monitors on one computer

geforce 9400 gt's. The computer is built by a company called falcon that specialises in computers for financial traders. You can get them in 4,6,8,12 monitor setups. There's a trader back in the officer who has 16 monitors, which i personally think is overkill - too much information flying at you!

With NVIDIA the configuration should be fairly straight-forward, don't know how will the computer handle the displays performance wise, linux graphics drivers have/had issues with that. Do you plan to use the setup for something resource intensive, presentations in gianormous format or displaying a hell lot of apps?

theoritically it should work. But I doubt anyone ever tried that much monitors so you may want to fire up a Live CD and try for your self.

Shouldn't be a problem then, although I looked at the specs of falcon pc's and you could even do some 3d stuff on it with a reasonable performance (like Compiz desktop effects). Send us a line if you have a problem with X configuration.

Oooh, I always wanted a setup like that, just so I could put them all in a circle, get in the middle with a chair and wireless keyboard/mouse, and just spin around like mad.

I had a triple monitor setup a few years ago, back when I had two video cards in my system. I figured since SLI wasn't supported in Linux, I'd make use of all those ports, since I had monitors laying around. If you're wondering I dual boot xp ONLY for gaming, and that's why I had SLI system back before it was supported on Linux. At the time I had to use a mix of twinview and xinerama to pull that off. I was also running Gentoo back then, so I cobbled together this really complex xorg.conf file by hand, so I'm not sure how easy it with the GUI options in Ubuntu. I poked around some of my old backups, but couldn't find a copy of the xorg.conf file I used. That must have been 4 years ago, so I'm sure it has to be easier than that today.

glad to see a trader around, 12 is a bit much, LOL..

Friend is using 3 for that purpose, on ATi 3650 cards. I never figure out how to get matrox G200 MMS working in Ubuntu (8.04 and 8.10).
