I have vista on a laptop. Was wondering if there is a way to install linux onto a external hard drive and use it from there just to play with it a bit?

You could also select the wubi install option on the ubuntu cd and put it inside windows (no need to partition)

Simply enter the Bios at startup and select the USB as the boot disk
