Is it possible to use the system beeper (a.k.a. PC speaker) as an audio device? This was possible in Windows 3.11 with a special driver. The quality was not good, but in my case that is unimportant.
I use headphones only part of the time so I'd like to use the internal PC speaker as an alternative means of notification when my headphones are not in use.
An audio line splitter is another solution, but then all audio will come out of the headphones and speaker(s). Some audio is private and should only go to headphones. Installing a second sound card is overkill and would require using an expansion slot.
