Why did no one at Canonical buy up ubuntu.org?

It takes you to http://www.ubuntu.upc.edu/

They should have bought ubuntu.{org,net,com}

Weird.

The organization that owns ubuntu.org existed prior to Ubuntu Linux's existence.

if someone had bought ubuntu.org after ubuntu linux came into existence, then canonical could take them to court over rights to the name.

someone had purchased coca-cola.com when the net was young, but was not able to keep it because coke was already around.

Does anyone know if Canonical has made an offer to that organization to buy ubuntu.org from them? I think they should.

Who cares? I don't see any problems with typing ubuntu.com instead of .org...

I'm no expert, but here is my thought process:

.com = commercial
.org =organization

Ubuntu is a product (although free) of Canonical, which to me sounds commerical

This forum is a support community for a linux distribution....sounds like an organization to me

Either way I dont care because I <3 bookmarks

In the UK domain registry (nominet) you're allowed to use the same name, as long as your product isn't the same as or similar to the what the other people produce. It's probably similar elsewhere.
