Installation Help

I'm brand new to ubuntu and I'm having some trouble with the installation. When I put the cd in and tell it to install it goes for a bit and comes up with a permission error and crashes. I already have XP and am trying to put ubuntu on a separate partition. I imagine I could be going about it all wrong so any help would be greatly appreciated.

1. What's the spec of your machine?

2. Did you run the checksum of the ISO image before you burnt it to a CD?

3. How fast did you burn it? Try burning it at a slower speed like 4x if you could.

4. Did you run the check cd for defects at the initial boot screen?

Spec: Not exactly sure what information is critical.

Burn Speed and Image: Not sure, I got it from the Comp Sci office at school.

Cd Check: I did run it and it said cd was free of defects, I also ran the memory check and it popped a few spots that had errors but it seemed like it just looped forever so I eventually stopped it.
