Hi i have been using ubuntu for a few months now and have been completely converted, i love it. Unfortunately i think my laptop now needs replacing and i was wondering which makes/models are the most ubuntu and linux compatible as i have had a few minor issues with my current pc. I do still wish to buy one with windows on it as i like having a dual boot set up.

Thanks for your advice,

James

depend where you're. So you should check in stores next to you. But I can tell you that my hp 6666 runs so very good with 8.10. Almost no memory in use and graphic card and wireless with the best drivers

I have had excellent across multiple ThinkPads spanning multiple generations. However, my next laptop will be a System 76 :) .

I predict many hours spent reading...

What I did was to look for a laptop that had the specs I deemed desireable at the right price, attempted to check it against the sites above for any serious issues ...

..and then took the gamble I would get it to work with at least one Linux distro (eventually)..
I ended up with an HP Pavilion 6700 (Tesco Direct!!!)
Seems Ok, not fully investigated the real Laptop uses like suspend etc, because that is not how I use it
I have bought this as a desktop replacement that I can transport easily, not for use 'on the move'...and I had an expectation that I would need to tweak a bit if I was to get things working, or just put up with things that did not until Linux support caught up..

Work out what functions you NEED in the laptop and try and check whether they are supported for the laptop you are considering... it's a forest of machines out there.. and the newer the machine the less likely you are to find a report..

If the need for working Linux without pain is a must, then I suppose the best advice is a machine that comes preloaded with Linux and Manufacturer support, but that can sometimes come at a price... (money )

Also Dell sells laptops with Ubuntu installed.

i like my toshiba (in repair and i dont know the model) it has 4GB of RAM, a shiney ATI card, 15.4 inches for the balance between size and portability, and was compatable with ubuntu 8.04 (it seems in .10 theres a problem with ati drivers...fglrx worked in arch but not ubuntu)

I'd simply suggest that whatever you choose, give it a few more months before you purchase if you can. prices are steadily going downward.
