For many months I've been trying to UG 7.04, but am unable to backup anything due to an unresolved bug affecting use of the USB ports. I have no CD drive so must upgrade via the Internet. Recently I was told the USB problem will not be worked on as 7.04 is no longer supported and am now trying to upgrade as safely as possible as I have many important files I wish to retain.
I am somewhat confused as I find numerous posts giving conflicting instructions on how to proceed, or instructions that only result in error messages and fail to upgrade. As best I can tell I should first upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 and following the instructions at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GutsyUpgrades
I receive the following errors:
Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/main/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80]
Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/restricted/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80]
Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/universe/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80]
Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty/multiverse/binary-i386/Packages.gz 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.40 80]

I had added the lines to /etc/apt/sources.list as told but they seem not to be accessed. And looking at http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/ubuntu it appears no data exists there for gutsy which I assume would be needed to progress.

Has anyone found a way to accomplish an UG from 7.04 to 7.10 since support has been eliminated?
