I always try to connect to wireless; nothing happens.
(but the wired network is pretty reliable, so I dont worry too much.)

Sure, for various reasons wireless connections may not be as fast or as stable as wired ones...but they should work. If you have no connectivity when connected wirelessly, something's wrong. Could you please connect to your wireless network, then post the output of these commands:

lspci -nn
lsusb
ifconfig
lshw -C Network
ping -c 10 google.com
host google.com
cat /etc/resolv.conf
time wget google.com
sudo iwlist scan

Also, I assume there are (non-Ubuntu) other computers in your house connected wirelessly, and they all work fine?

You're using the ipw2200 driver, which should be relatively reliable. Could you please connect wirelessly, then post the output of these commands:

ifconfig eth1
ping -c 10 google.com
ping -c 10 192.168.1.1
host google.com
cat /etc/resolv.conf
time wget google.com
