Hey fellas,

could you tell me... I want to upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10

Firstly and most importantly, I have reconfigured my boot up completely (for speed),so don't get splash screen etc. If I upgrade, will I loose all these changes???

Secondly, is there any benefit of upgrading? I was gonna upgrade to make it easier to use docky, but after trying AWN I found icons distracting so not gonna use it now.

Thanks :D

If you have a spare partition I would suggest you do a trial run of 8.10 before upgrading your 8.04 installation. I have both on my laptop and really don't use 8.10 much because of stability problems.

One thing I can say is that on my system 8.10 boots somewhat faster than 8.04, but overall I find that 8.04 just works better for me. I used 6.06 until hardy was released and I have to say that when using dapper I never had the crashes and hangs that I experienced with 8.04 and 8.10. Of course YMMV, many people have nothing but good things to say about 8.10

The init sequence of 8.10 compared to 8.04 has changed quite a bit so it likely that you will have to redo any tweaks you have made there.

I would stick to 8.04. It's more stable and it has longer support (2011 I believe)

My personal opinion is that if 8.04 works solidly on your hardware, I'd consider not upgrading. The main difference between 8.04 and 8.10 is one of polish.

I'd also add that even if you don't have a spare partition, you can install 8.10 in VirtualBox.

The only reason I would install 8.10 is support for newer packages and drivers. The reason I won't install is the problems I've had with every install of 8.10 I've tried.

For the desktop yes. For the server it's 2013.

Thats fantastic. Thanks everyone. To be honest, I prefer not to mess with something that works perfectly (Apart from tweaking the setup for sounds and wireless at the start, everything on 8.04 has worked perfectly for me with absolutely no crashes).

I'll stick with 8.04 and maybe upgrade if the jaunty jackalope wallpaper looks nice ( :D )

To upgrade you would have to upgrade to Ibex first, then Jaunty.

Wow, never realised that.

Maybe I'll just go ahead and try a clean install in the future. I always worry about having to reinstall all the software, codecs, drivers, changing boot up..etc etc etc. I estimate that it would take me at least 24 hours solid work just to get my system as it is now if I was going to start from a fresh install.

Indeed, maybe procedure to follow is the same that I use when buying computers... don't change if there is not a problem, but if you need something more, get the best you can.
