I recently installed 8.1 and i came across a similar problem i had with 7 (so i ditched it), 6.06 worked fine.
The live CD always works but after i installed ubuntu onto the HD under the default settings the computer hangs during boot up.

On bootup grub has something like
:uid=*****-******
:boot = /vmlinuz-2.27.6-generic uid=*****-******
:boot intrd

now when i select the vmlinuz option the computer has about a 90% chance of booting.

I just dont know why.

The documentation on grub must be dated. The method of editing the menu.lst file was very different and i cant work out where to make the changes.

Also on the Ctrl+Alt+F6 screen it hangs on loading hardware drivers & on Ctrl+Alt+F1- kinit-normal boot.[under the default boot setting]
