If I install Ubuntu, does it completely wipe Microsoft Windows (in this case Vista) from my system? [please say yes ;p]

That, my friend, is entirely up to you.

Using the Live CD you could go to System/Administration/Partion Editor and reformat the hard drive for the new installation. You can allow Ubuntu to resize your drive and install on the newly created partition and run a dual boot system. Later, if you really want to get rid of Vista, you can still wipe the Vista partition and resize the Ubuntu partition to use the entire drive space.

Excellent. I have to get mine done at a computer store though, because my cd drive is broken and I can't afford a new one at the moment.
Hoping I can find a store which will use an external drive to install it for me.

Thanks for your help. :)

I do not know where you are located but if in the US, and near a major city, you may find a Micro Center Computer store around or go online to:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/
http://www.newegg.com/

I have purchased several DVD burner drives for $29. Less if someone returned one and they have it in the return bin.

You could always install ubuntu without a CD:
