I am trying to use Ubuntu 8.10 to print to a printer (Brother HL-2070N) connected via ethernet cable to a wireless router. I used ubuntu's built-in printer configuration to find and setup my printer. However, every 24 hours, the router assigns a new IP address to the printer and ubuntu cannot find the printer. I have to manually check the IP address of the printer and change the Ubuntu printer settings every day! For example, when I initially configured the printer, its IP address was 192.168.1.101, but today it is 192.168.1.104.

How can I have Ubuntu automatically detect the IP address of the printer whenever I print? I have other computers running Windows XP that do not have this problem.

Can you not go into the printers administrative console and set a static ip?

I'm not sure how to do that. (I don't have any of the printer's software installed on my Ubuntu desktop.)
