View Full Version : [ubuntu] Upgrade Manager, Synaptic, upgrades already upgraded programs?

Hello --

I've installed some of my own upgrades (OpenOffice 3.0, Firefox 3.0.3), by downloading them straight from their respective websites.

Whenever I use update-manager, though, it always wants to reinstall them. Is there a way I can make update-manager see my current installations? Conversely, can I use synaptic to "uninstall" whatever versions that it sees, so that I can get update-manager just to ignore this?

Or is it something else? Many thanks.

I am using Ubuntu Hardy 8.04.1

Just search for those packages from synaptic and see if you can remove them from your machine. Then, the update won't prompt you to upgrade those packages anymore.

And that won't mess with the installations that I did outside of synaptic? I mean, if I uninstall openoffice in synaptic, it won't mess with the one that I downloaded on my own?

Synaptic doesn't even see or know about the version that you installed own your own by hand.
