What's a good free (as in speech, bonus points for as in beer and speech) iPod replacement?

I'm not looking for a phone or anything. :P

I'd just like it to have a good UI. Touch interface is a plus.

So basically a iPod Nano/iPod Touch replacement.

Cowon S9. Sexy amoled touch-screen, Linux-friendly, plays ogg and flac, great sound quality. http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2008/12/cowon-iaudio-s9-review.php

A lot of MP3 players can use the Rockbox OS which I believe is FOSS. I don't think you'll find an MP3 player for sale with FOSS on it stock. If you're okay without FOSS then Cowon is really good. Good sound quality, and ogg and flac as mentioned above.

I'm quite interested in getting a non-iPod mp3 player, so thanks for these suggestions.

Also, MASSIVE BUMP!

Anything that supports MSC (Mass-storage class) transfer mode will be Linux-friendly. Basically the player will show up as any removable drive would and you can copy/paste files as you see fit. Only a handful of players support this feature; I can think of Sandisk, Trekstor, and Cowon off the top of my head.

I've got an Archos 5, which runs Linux. The battery life isn't great, but it has a 250GB hard drive.

the new Zii Egg (http://www.zii.com/Developer/Landing.aspx) is looking very promising.

If you want a FOSS system then you should shoot for a Rockbox device or something that runs Linux. I think Rockbox is probably more purely FOSS than a lot of the Linux devices, though. (I only say this because I suppose that these devices utilize proprietary hardware drivers whereas all code in Rockbox is GPL.)

If you have a supported device then the freedom of Rockbox can be had for free (as in beer). However, if you're planning to obtain a physical device you shouldn't hold your breath for free as in beer.
