I am trying a set-up that doesn't use any panels (reminds me of Windows) or docks (reminds me of OSX). It relies mainly on screenlets and gnome-do.

Question 1: How can I get rid of gnome-panel? I tried removing it from sessions, but it isn't listed. I tried "killall gnome-panels" but it comes back. I am using Intrepid, if it matters.

Question 2: Is there a program that does the same thing as the "notification area" applet for gnome panel? A screenlet would be ideal.

Question 3: Is there a way to put the icons for the minimized windows on the desktop? Right now I am using the window manager screenlet, but i recall seeing a option to put them on the desktop in xfce. Is there a way to do that with gnome?

Question 4: Some of my screenlets loose their positioning when I log out and back in. Is that a bug, or is there a way to fix it?

Question 5: Should I just switch to xfce? That would take care of questions 1 and 3. Is it hard to get compiz or screenlets to work? Does emerald still work?
