I got bored at work and went into Windows Explorer and wanted to check out the computer specs. These made me laugh out loud while my co-workers continue to look at me like I'm crazy. 1.8ghz pentium 4, 256mb sdram, 20gig hhd:lol: No wonder it takes 4min to start up let anlone starting multiple programs. O ya its Win 2000 pro

That's not very bad specs, except for maybe on the ram side.
My new computer, while it has two cores, runs on a whopping 1.6GHz. Granted, it has more ram and hdd though.

My laptop at home has a dual-core centrino at 1.8ghz. It's the 256mb ram and 20gig harddrive thats so sad. Isn't this the minimum requirements for Windows.

Are you playing games at work? Those specs are fine for most word processing, e-mail, etc. I suspect that machine has those specs for a reason, they don't want you goofing off on the job!

I have two machines with 800MHz Pentium IIIs, 256MB RAM, and 20 GB Harddrives, they run Windows XP just fine.

I don't see anything wrong with that. Give a gig of memory (or 512MB is enough if I stay away from Open Office, which I use to view the occasional .doc or .odt that comes my way) and I'd be fine with that. 20GB of hard drive space is not much, but at least it would stop me from installing a dozen different Linux distros :) -- unless they were all minimal distros :P

Well its sad in my eyes because there are two programs that are 'proprietary' and run constantly in the background. Real resources hogs. These programs won't freeze even if the rest are frozen. So I'm guessing these aquire a certain amount of memory and never let go.

I see people here don't buy new computers very often. I have an old ME computer from 2000 with similar specs. I never looked until a bout 6 months ago, but that computer ( was given to me when I was 12-13) had a Nvidia graphics card in it! No wonder we could play nice games on it until around 2005.

I must be spoiled with my Duo Core E4600 @ 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM and 80GB drive. Of course, I'm running 8+ office programs alongside a Virtual Machine and Citrix for most of the day. :)

Me too, I have a 3.06 ghz INtel Core 2 Duo, 1TB HDD, 4GB ram, Nvidia 9600... of course I do my fair share of gaming and sometimes VMware... But I also wouldnt not give up my dinky little laptop.

Windows XP will run on 128MB, but not very well. You can get Linux on 128MB, but you'll need to make some sacrifices.

eeeep im pretty spoiled too i must admit

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.5 GHz, 4 Gigs' DDR2 RAM, 1.2 TB HDD, and the CrossfireX with 2 ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics cards w/ 512Mb GDDR3 RAM on each. plays left 4 dead like a champion.

downside is, ATI is a pain to get to cooperate in Ubuntu, nVidia is probably the way to go

At least those specs stop you from playing WOW at work. :)

If it were up to me I would be on Linux lol. I guess some of the programs won't work with Linux because even our local server is Windows. I'm so desperate for it to be faster I would even go for DamnSmallLinux :) Stupid work lol. Thats why I'am here all day, I'm deprived of Linux
