That Comes vs. Microsoft case is great :)

This is quite interesting. It's rather effective proof that Microsoft is indeed somewhat afraid of Linux to the point that they'll poach developers. 2001, though, so Balmer has probably figured out the community part at this point.

I would love to know what he means about "cultural alignment." I can guess (and it sounds really creepy!), but there is probably another document detailing their specific (shattered?) dreams.

it's crazy that we can't get Intel to do Windows first, then Linux (if they must)...

That sounds pretty good from a Linux user's point of view ;)

If we don't get Intel off of Linux internally (the failed EDA project) - we will never get the *cultural* alignment that we want. There are simply too many folks at Intel who use/love the stuff [i.e., Linux] and want to improve it.

I wonder if I'm reading this right and a lot of Intel employees actually contribute to Linux (whether as their job or on their free time)?

I also wonder if the times have changed since then (five years is a long time in computing), since Intel is one of the major companies you really want to support Linux if you want good hardware support...

They do. See http://linuxfoundation.org/publications/linuxkerneldevelopment.php, Table 4.

Ah, thanks for the link :)

Now that I think of it, I've actually seen a presentation on Google Tech Talks about this (I think it was from the same guy) and I should have remembered that...
