I'm experimenting with Ubuntu 8.10 on my Toshiba Lap Top. I burned an 8.10 boot disk. So far, I've only been booting Ubuntu from the disk and haven't installed it. There are 2 applications that are very important to me: Skype, and Grabit. When I looked at the package manager, neither of these applications were available. Is there any way I can get these installed in Ubuntu? I know that there is an eeeUbuntu version of Skype - I have it installed on my Asus eeePC; but the open source newsreaders I've looked at in the past pale in comparison to Grabit. Besides, I subscribe to the Grabit search engine, and would like to continue using it. Of course, I can run my machine in dual boot mode, and boot Vista when I want to run Grabit or Skype -- but my ultimate goal is to get rid of Vista completely.

You can install skype by adding the medibuntu repo as a 3rd party to your sources.list, this will then allow you to install skype
You can follow these (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu) instructions to add the medibuntu repo then once you have added it in the terminal type

sudo apt-get install skype or search for skype in synaptic package manager and install.

You might be able to get Grabit working using wine

There are also some linux equivalents for grabit
