View Full Version : [ubuntu] Low Volume Some Sound Works, Some Not

My integrated sound is recognized;
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Device 4001
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22
Memory at 90420000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel
Kernel modules: snd-hda-intel
The sound preference window testing gives a tone for every thing but for Audio Conferencing, sound capture does not work.
Volume is set high in Volume Control, Alsa Mixer and Pulse Audio, but it is extremely low in the sounds that work (Rhythmbox & login).
I am running Ubuntu 8.10. I have never had this problem before...where I sort of have sound, but not really. I would appreciate some suggestions.

Thanks, zoey

Start by installing gnome-alsamixer from synaptic or:

sudo apt-get install gnome-alsamixer

It'll then show up in Sound & Video. Look at mine for comparison:

My Volume is set at high in Gnome Alsa Mixer, volume control and Pulse Audio.

Thanks, zoey

More information; ubuntu 8.10 is on a Sata drive using an Intel DG33TL board with onboard sound. The sound has been faint or non-existent since installation. In sound preferences everything yields a tone except sound capture. I have the volume set high in master volume control, gnome alsa mixer and pulse audio. I have very faint login sounds and Rhythm Box will play softly with volume on high. I attempted a fix for pulse audio as posted here; http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ighlight=sound but bash didn't like the very first command. My onboard sound is recognized;

Here is the output for pulse audio;
margo@margo-desktop:~$ sudo pkill pulseaudio; sleep 2; pulseaudio -vv

I checked permissions in users and groups and pulse, pulse access and pulse-rt are all listed.
Does this tell anyone anything? I haven't a clue and I would really appreciate some help in getting my sound going.
Thanks, zoey
