Plugged in HDMI, now sound control quit working??

I plugged in my laptop HDMI output to my TV to watch a movie... now the audio buttons on my laptop no longer control the sound... the little shadowbox-like thing shows up and shows a volume slidebar going up or down, but this doesn't effect the volume at all.. i have to actually open the volume controls from the taskbar and adjust there. How do I fix this or configure the sound controls back to default settings?

Anyone wanna tell me how to fix this? It would be a huge knock on ubuntu if I have to reinstall ubuntu to fix this issue

Have you tried downloading the audio codecs for your media player. You can find codec packages in Add/Remove applications.
