i am fairly new to linux and it was all going well until i tried doing clever things...now openoffice works but without spellcheck and some other features. firefox also refuses to play videos.

It might help by telling us what was the last clever thing you did before firefox stopped playing videos and OO.org Writer stopped spellchecking...

And what kind of video's doesn't Firefox play anymore? Youtube (Flash) or streaming (asf/wmv/mpeg/rm)?

For the OpenOffice thing try
1. Open Writer
2. Tools>Language>For all Text> select your language (English UK for e.g.)
3. Type something wrong, see if it worked.

firefox also refuses to play videos.

Did you install flash plugins.


sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree

Well, I don't quite recall. I think I googled the combination "tux" and "ubuntu" and up came this charming penguin!
