I currently am running Ubuntu 8.10 and I have Gnome, KDE 4.1, and XFCE installed. I was wondering how to install KDE 3.5 and still keep 4.1 so I can just switch back and forth with the session manager at the log on screen. I Googled for about half an hour, tried various suggestions, but none have seemed to work.

Thanks!

You should be able to install it pretty simply through Synaptic. I have both running, they maintain separate config folders as far as I know.

sudo aptitude install kde-core

Should give you the basic KDE package. I have KDE3.5, KDE4, Gnome, and Fluxbox and can run all four in separate sessions simultaneously!

Regarding dual-DE'ing, I installed KDE a while ago on my Ubuntu, but I got an annoying problem of both apps from KDE and gnome starting up automatically on both DEs. So, I'd get everything from double network managers to horrible icons in KDE panel and overglossy icons in gnome!

Is there a way I can separate them and live happily with both DEs? If so, how?

Thanks in advance ;)

If I should open a separate thread, even though it's essencially the same subject, please say so :)
