8.04system not working after attempted backup

I use Ubuntu 8.04. My problems might not be related to the attempt at a backup, but they started right after. Immediately before that I was in the process of adding files needed to run dvds. I am new to linux so probably did something wrong, but don't know how to pinpoint my problem to begin cleanup. Here are my symptoms: 1)firefox settings (bookmarks, extras) gone and everything runs slow, 2)keep getting a message OpenOffice is still open and can't be used when I log in, 3) when I open OpenOffice I get a message about not having enough space in a hidden openoffice.org backup file to continue, 4) when I hit the main logout symbol it goes directly to shutdown and bypasses the switch user, etc. screen and freezes, and 5) when I hit the button to shut it off manually I get a bunch of messages that move too quickly to tell you specifically what they say, but I catch the words, "Network Manager" frequently. I had installed wpa-supplicant and it was working fine so I haven't even used or touched Network Manager knowingly.

Do you have any suggestions on where to start or what diagnostic messages I might be able to retrieve? Thank you.

Can you tell us more about that backup attempt. What did you do? What program, if any? What guide did you follow?

I was backing up to a mini maxtor hard drive but I think I must have edited the code incorrectly either when I tried to exclude the media drive or direct it there because it was taking over an hour to back up. Is that what its supposed to do? Anyway, it stopped midstream and told me I didn't have enough space which I know shouldn't be right because its a 160g device. I didn't know what to do then, so I cancelled it thinking it didn't do anything and I would need to start over. I couldn't close the system properly and the other symptoms started showing up.

(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683) You have to select the code and commands based on what system you have and I'm wondering if I picked up the wrong thing and didn't know and that is also contributing to the problem. I did not get my dvd player to work. I decided I was going to have to take my laptop to get the DVD player fixed as it wouldn't work on the Vista side of my dual boot either and was looking like a hardware issue not a software issue. That is when I followed the backup tutorial and it stopped. I took the laptop in and they cleaned it and clicked on a few things in the Windows OS, but never went into the Ubuntu side. The laptop never left my sight so I don't think they did anything to it.

You can try reviewing your Terminal history by using the history command. Post it here if needed.

Not sure if this is what you are after, but this is what came up at the end from when I started the multimedia how to. It looks strange to me in the fact that #272 I put in intrepid commands and realized that so I went back and did hardy and several things after that, but those are not appearing on this list. Is there a place to see all the "output" of the terminal when I put these commands in?
Is there something else I should do to "undo" #272 rather than just redo with hardy?

Hi KC,
I don't see anything special in these commands, and think they didn't cause the issues you have. Have you reviewed the backup commands too?
The reason you don't see some of the commands may be because they were run as root. History shows commands issued by the current user, and since you used sudo su to run as root, issue history after sudo su to see those.

Just to make sure I understand, is this what I will type in the terminal:

sudo su history

If so, I'll try it out when I get home.

Okay, I found the history on the backup, but am having trouble copying and pasting with the system being down. I can't even login to the forums from that OS. So I reviewed it and think I know what the problem is. I'll run it again corrected to see if that clears up some of this and let you know.

These were my original backup commands:
tar cvpzf backup.tgz --exclude=/proc --exclude=/lost+found --exclude=/backup.tgz --exclude=/mnt --exclude=/sys / --exclude=/media

I thought the order of the commands were important and I changed to this and ran again. Still have the same symptoms and couldn't boot without getting stuck at BusyBox until I read a thread that helped me get past that. Now I just have the same symptoms in my original post.

Both of the commands shouldn't have worked, since there are only exlude locations and nothing to backup. From what you posted however, it looks like you backed up alot of stuff from Windows. Did you delete the previous backups? Make sure the disk is not full with <df -h> command (can use the recovery mode for that).

I need more instruction on deleting previous backups. I'm not finding anything that seems to be the right thing to delete. These were the results of the df -h command. I looked at these various locations, but don't really know what I'm doing.
I know this forum does not recommend suggesting a re-install to fix every problem and I am learning by fixing what is broken so I'm not wanting to reinstall, but if I need to let me know. I don't have a lot of personalized stuff and I only have a few program installed so far.
