Need updated dev packages

Hi all, I'm looking for newer versions of some gnome libraries and their dev versions so I can build some stuff out of CVS and hopefully start hacking at the code.

I'm a bit new to the apt-get thing so bear with me...

These packages do exist for dapper and also debian-unstable, would you recommend using those or perhaps setting up a chroot environment and loading that up with all sorts of risky packages? I'm not super paranoid about nuking my machine, I'm pretty confident I could undo any damage I create.
