I am really new to this so point me out where I am wrong if possible...

I am trying to install Ubuntu on my Toshiba S2800-100 laptop. I am running from a CD and I press install on the first Ubuntu menu. A screen comes up that looks like a loading screen with the Ubuntu logo. Next thing I see is a flashing "_" (underscore) and what it looks like is that ubuntu is trying to find a file?

There are a few things you have to do first before you can install it on your laptop.

1. Run the checksum on the ISO image right after you downloaded to check the integrity of the file.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM

2. Burn the ISO file as an image file and at a slow speed like 4x.

3. At the initial menu, run the scan cd for defects to make sure the CD is good.

What's the spec of your laptop anyway?

It says the CD has 1 file error? Do I have to rewrite it because of that?

Short answer, yes. Longer answer, yes, but only after you check the md5sum of the downloaded iso.
