Partition Question

Ok I think I am going to solve this by manually setting up all of my partitions, (Vista's manager wont let me combine partitions unless they are NTFS,) install ubuntu, then install xp (byby vista)-- worried about software licensing problems though, any fyi's? Can I preserve the restore "d" drive, or do I need to backup on an external source?

You should install XP first, then Ubuntu. Doing it the other way round, XP will overwrite the MBR where grub normally resides.
