Desktop Menu Bar Disappeared

After starting Ubuntu 8.10 I did the usual login and when my desktop appeared the main menu panel was missing. Only my icons appear on my desktop (and they work fine) but the normal 'Applications-Places-System' menu is missing.

Thanks for the speedy reply and the link. I cannot do what the link suggests because I cannot start a terminal session. Alt-F2 (F3,F4 etc) has no effect. I may have more wrong than missing panels.

That also will open the Terminal window.
