Bypass automatic login as Windows' Shift key.

With Windows, if you have automatic login enable, you can hold the SHIFT key when the system would normally ask for a login and instead of automatically logging in it will drop to the prompt. I recall being able to do just that in a past Ubuntu install but in 8.10 it doesn't seem to work. So is there a way to enable this feature/security hole?
