I would like to know if/how you can launch a Vista and/or XP install from within the Ubuntu liveUSB. If that isn't possible, how can you make a multi-boot USB pen drive that allows the install or linux, vista, xp, or one of 5 other live distros like partedmagic, ophcrack, etc...? Thanks!

You can't launch a windows install from inside a running Linux, no.

Making a multiboot USB drive is a lot like making a multiboot disk, I would think. You'd have to install grub or syslinux or something on it. I'm not sure how happy windows will be with that situation; it normally expects to own the install media entirely.

I've tried running linux live from a flash drive and it is very slow and inefficient. if you plan on using it a lot just install it, it's easy!!
if you really don't want to install it look into wubi or running the live CD.
