View Full Version : [kubuntu] Trying to "downgrade" back to KDE 3.5

I've only played with KDE 4 a little bit, and it really pisses me off.
I didn't ask for a Mac-like desktop manager. I chose KDE because it's been a good thing in the past. KDE 4 IS NOT an improvement in the series, and I wouldn't classify KDE 4 as actually being KDE.

I'm trying to find a way to "downgrade" to the vastly superior KDE 3.5, but unfortunately it's not in the Ubuntu repositories anymore.
I'm currently trying to downgrade by way of adding a standard Debian repository and manually tweaking all the dependencies in aptitude.

Does anyone have any recommendations on any easier method to get rid of KDE 4 and install KDE 3.5?

Sorry, no, I can't help with your question. I just wanted to say that you're not alone! After a week or so of playing with 8.10 and its "new and improved" version of KDE, I've pretty much decided I don't like it. This KDE doesn't appear to be nearly as customizable as 3.5, plus I really don't like some of its arbitrary features which--like you--I didn't ask for, don't like, and don't want. I may be joining you in your search for a good way to downgrade back to 3.5!

I did find this link.

http://apt.pearsoncomputing.net/

It appears that they're creating (well, seems to be pretty well complete) their own repository with KDE 3.5 based programs, the supporting binaries, and libraries to keep them working.

I don't know if it's better to stick with Hardy for a while until changes are made to Intrepid to get and keep KDE 3.5 possible as an alternate path to KDE 4.whatever (yuck!), or to upgrade to Intrepid and use the repository as a way to graft a healthy version of KDE onto it.

Looks like we're not the only ones unhappy with KDE 4!
