Preying mantises are my second-favorite insect. They are cool, but these suckers are positively epic:

I used to think beetles were nice and harmless, till i learnt that some scarabs were some of the most poisonous insects in the world.
First time I've heard of Goliath Beetles though. cool.

Check out these guys(Asian giant hornet):

http://www.naturenet.net/blogs/media/mandarinia2.jpg

They are pretty dangerous. They even engage in tactical combat!

From Wikipedia:

The Asian giant hornet is a relentless hunter that preys on other large insects such as bees, other hornet species, and mantises.

The hornets often attack honey bee hives with the goal of obtaining the honey bee larvae. A single scout, sometimes two or three, will cautiously approach the nest, giving off pheromones which will lead the other hornets to the hive's location.

We've always called them Japanese Hornets; maybe they are really called Asian giant hornets. Anyhow, they have a HUGE nest in the top of a dead tree near our barnyard, and come down to drink the sap off of trees or hummingbird feeders. We actually kill them with sticks and flyswatters, but you have to be fast.

I've had these suckers land on my neck and head after missing, and I went running like a maniac while swatting my head. I saw my dog get stung by one of these creeps a long time ago, and it left a massive welt on his nose

That sends chills down my back, but that's because I'm allergic to bees!

Flamethrower! More precise than smoke (that is unless you use a LOT of smoke!)

I love normal-sized bees and wasps. I've been stung at least ten times, it just bounces off me now. But something that big... no, I will NOT submit!

Do scorpions' poison sting enough to kill the average adult? I hear different tales and never know which to believe.

Yeah, I get these often in my house too. My mum loves them. as for the hornets, i saw a special on them. 20 can kill 50,000 bees in a few mins. they are badass.
The Japanese honey bees have a defense mechanism though, they envelop the hornet in a ball of bees, then vibrate their wings rapidly, raising the temp of the ball and thus the hornet, killing it.

Amazing.

My father got stung by a scorpion in the chest while sleeping once. Gave him some slight discomfort later on in the day, but nothing serious. For most species adults are pretty much safe unless allergic. It's really children who are at risk...

My Mantis is gone :(

From Wikipedia:

If ever I come across some of them, I'll hope I have either:

a) a car or something to hide in. Some sort of Armour with goggles would do, or

b) a shotgun with a lot of really small shot, that should get them. Tear them nicely to shreds.

c) Some sort of scent stuff that makes them ignore me. Then, when they are in a sense of false security, swat them or b). Or I'd ignore them.

d) a Hornet Someone else's problem field.

With scorpions the smaller they are the more poisonous You could be stung by 100 big ones and have nothing more than a sore arm leg whatever. But you get stung by one small one your basically dead.

Since I'm alergic to bees, I've managed to keep myself calm around bees so they have less reason TO sting me (not flailing wildly, jumping up-and-down screaming like a banshee!)

So far, it usually does me well but I don't think I'd keep my composure with one of THESE! I'd probably run, hide and cry like a baby!

Thanks for the heads-up on the scorpions (small=bad)

Fatalities from scorpion stings are rare. Small children are more at risk and some people have worse reactions than others.

I have two categories for small animals: Jerks and Friendlies.

If an animal is one of those which will just happily go on its way if you leave it alone (most spiders, bees for example), then they are Friendlies.

If an animal is one of those which delights in bouncing off your face (daddy long legs, flies) or starts getting agitated and attacks if you go anywhere near it, it is a Jerk.

Use my highly scientific categorical system to help you survive in the wild, friends!

I like the jerks and friendlies idea. I'm all for live and let live, but as you say I don't want them in my face. The ones that really get me are ants. They fascinate me with their social structure, but when they get in the kitchen I'm afraid they have to die. Sorry.

I was under the impression that most scorpion bites are non-fatal, but I'm not sure.

I don't like killing them (Instant Karma!). If it's just one (like a spider or a daddy long legs, for example) I usually just catch it and put it outside. Ants are one of those though where if you keep finding them, you've probably got a problem. They can be a lot harder to remove without killing them.

A rat got into my house once through the fire-place. I just left my cat in the room and came back a while later to find a dead rat and a very happy cat. (I don't mind the CAT killing something :P ).

Their 'bites' are harmless. In rare instances the venom injected from their stingers can be fatal.

I have some different types of ants currenly, mostly they keep to themselves. Find food then go back to the nest. Got a new red and black type I'm sharing my beedroom and computer desk with. Well mannered fellows, never go into my tower or anything.

Only time i see them is if i have something to drink and leave the cup on my desk. They appear, clean out the cup(spotless) then head back home. I like them....

Well, I have two categories too, but different from yours:

1 - Animals that go in my plate
2 - Animals that go under my foot
