I have a dual boot set up between windows and ubuntu; a partion for windows, a partition for ubuntu, and a big partition for data. If I reinstall windows, I've been told this will erase grub, how do I avoid or repair this?

I'm not sure of a way to avoid Windows overwriting the MBR but if you have an Ubuntu LiveCD, reinstalling grub is fairly easy. There is a guide here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RecoveringUbuntuAfterInstallingWindows

You can reinstall Grub after Windows.
