I just want something that can surf the internet, IM, etc. the very basic stuff.

Who makes the cheapest netbook? I'm looking for something in the 150-300 dollar range.

I've seen the Acer Aspire One 110 (Linux) in PC world for £170, or Acer Aspire One 150 (Linux) £200 with 120GB HDD. Bought one (150 Model), loved it, Installed Kubuntu, build a script to fix the little niggles and it runs like a dream.

You'll probably find it cheaper than PC World, I was just lazy. :KS

The original (1st gen) EEE's are pretty cheap, if you can still find one.

If you want an Atom-based device, I think the Acer Aspire One is generally the cheapest. I just got a Dell Mini 9 in the UK for £186, which compares to £175 for the Acer.

It is not the cheapest but i strongly suggest you msi windbook , 400g less weight and 6 cell battery, if you gonna buy a netbook be sure it has 6 cell battery and it is around 1000g, otherwise you waste your time and money

I notice the picture at that link describes the machine as having "2GB memory" - I would be wary of buying computer equipment from a manufacturer that doesn't understand the difference between memory and storage. That said, I've always had positive experiences with goods bought at Maplin, so who knows?

By the way here's an article regarding that laptop: http://gizmodo.com/392523/bestlink-alpha-400-the-250-eee

I have just been looking at the Maplin minibook (A98HX) for my wife to use for web browsing and email when she is out and about.

Has anyone actually used one of these units? I know the spec seems pretty naff but it looks to me that they are ideal for simple browsing purposes.

Is there any better value out there for a simple netbook?

To be honest if you want cheap you cant beat the above. but if you want something which you can actually do stuff on then you cant go wrong with the dell mini 9 plus I've read somewhere that the one from Maplins has some strange obscure type of architecture which means there's no chance of getting windows on it and a slim chance of linux...

The EeePC 701 range can be picked up cheaply and they run Ubuntu with a little tweaking.

I've got one of these little machines and will admit they ain't no acer, however they are an interesting little tool, once the default OS is removed. Some info on my Website under the link 3MX

We finally took the plunge and bought a Maplin Minibook a.k.a. CnM Book. Very impressive for the money, even with the default Linux OS :-)

Don't expect it to be as extendable or configurable as a full Ubuntu installation but most essential software is already installed. The web browser is Firefox 2 (Bon Echo) and the POP3/IMAP email/contacts client is Sylpheed. Abiword and Gnumeric provide the office functionality, together with PDF and calendar apps.

Photos can be displayed full screen, and look far better than on a mobile phone display. MP3s can be played, preferably through headphones as the built in speakers are atrocious! There are even a few games included if you like to waste time. ;-)

While I wouldn't recommend it for use as a primary PC at home, it is quite adequate for use while travelling to keep in touch.

All depends where you are. I would grab one of these but I can't get one into Australia:

Do a search on Amazon. They are $250 American.
