I just picked up a 8 gig Kingston for $13 on the Boxing Day sale (day after Christmas for those outside Canada) so now I'm wondering what I should keep on it. I often work on friends/family computers so please add to the list any Windows/Linux things I should always have handy! Here's some I already use:

FreeZip - Like WinZip but free and works very well. Works more like WinRAR actually.
Adobe Photoshop CS3 install file - in case I need any of its special talents
Nero 7 Ultimate install file - In case I have to burn a DVD or .iso in the process of troubleshooting said computer
Ubuntu 8.1 .iso image - to show them and try to convince them they'll like it more!

I would keep a bunch of Portable (http://portableapps.com) Apps (http://pendriveapps.com) on it, along with a separate partition for bootable Linux, such as SliTaz or PUD.

Look.
Install linux on that flash drive (using the Creator USB stick in intrepid)
Then you don't need any of those apps as you would have a complete OS with everything you need on it...

You can get the ClamAV virus scanner from the PortableApps website.

I'd definitely recommend Portable Apps http://portableapps.com/
Lots of great apps.

Also you could use the new Live USB Creator in Ubuntu and create a portable Ubuntu you can take anywhere. :)

I suppose you've never heard of BIOS passwords.

I suppose you've never heard of popping the little CMOS battery out of the computer for a minute?

I suppose you've never heard of people being around while you unplug the computer, take the case off and then pop out the CMOS battery while the librarian calls security?

I bought three 8G flash drives on boxing day. I jammed them full of MP3s and plugged them into my garage computer.

Is the Live USB Creator installed in 8.04 or do I have to d/l and install it myself?

Ask and you shall receive!

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

If you're using Intrepid, click on System > Administration > Create a USB startup disk.
----------

So check to see if it's the same in 8.04.
