I just installed VMware-server-2.0.0-122956 on my up-to-date 8.10 machine (kernel: 2.6.27-11-generic #1 SMP x86_64).
When running the vmware-config.pl script I get no errors, however when done I have no "vmnet0" for bridging seen by "ifconfig".
I do get vmnet1 and vmnet8, and I confirmed that the NAT setup does work (through vmnet8). However, I want/need bridged mode.
I see no errors in the /var/log/vmware/ logs.
I don't see a "vmnet0" directory in /etc/vmware (vmnet[1,8] are there).
After running the "vmware-config.pl" script it starts everything and it has:
Starting VMware services:
...
Bridged networking on /dev/vmnet0 done
...
but networking doesn't worked bridged.
I have /dev/vmnet[0-9]. I've googled, searched the forum, etc. and just decided to ask. So, if anyone has suggestions I'd love to hear them.
The eth0 interface is a built-in on a Dell C521:
04:07.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401-B0 100Base-TX (rev 02)
Thanks in advance,
LCB.

Are you sure it is eth0?, on my system it is eth1 and I had to make the manual change in the vmware setup.

I'm positive (only have lo and eth0 interfaces):
$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:1e:c9:35:30:e5
...
lo Link encap:Local Loopback

Yes, and there is a thread linked in the mega thread with detailed instructions.

Hi to all! I have EXACTLY the same problem.
I am running Ubuntu 8.10 (with the latest updates & patches), VMware ServerVersion 2.0.0Build 122956, on a Mac Pro (server, not laptop)
I installed a Ubuntu8.10 in a VM (a ready-made VM "appliance"), that works perfectly with NAT/hostonly interfaces. It goes online via the host eth0 interface (on a public, static address), browse the net, and so on.
However, I am struggling to get it working with a BRIDGED interface to eth1, using a second public static address, so that the virtual Linux machine can be accessed from the outside.
According to a friend, who admnis tens of these things for his company, networking in the guest is configured correctly.
The only problem I can see is that VMWare's vmnet0 does not show up if ifconfig:
[sergio 17:05 ~]$ ifconfig (I removed the static public IP from eth0)

-----------------------
I deleted the entire network configuration, and re-done as the standard (vmnet0 bridged to eth1, vmnet1 host only, vmnet8 NAT).
At the end of the run of vmware-config.pl I get:

Yes, I read through the thread (which is very good) before posting.
I saw no help for my issue there. Of note also is that I believe prior to the latest vmware server I had installed fine with this setup, so I believe it is something unique to the newest vmware version. This was repeatable on a different machine as well.

Oh, I missed that, sorry if I came across as terse.
Did you get an error message or could you describe the problem in more detail ?

No worries. I only see the following in /var/log/vmware/hostd.log:
[2009-01-07 09:31:32.488 'App' 139882359801568 error] An error occurred while loading configuration "/usr/lib/vmware/settings",not all entries are being read. It is strongly encouraged that you manually inspect the file and fix any corruptions.
(this file doesn't exist) and also this:
[2009-01-07 09:31:30.472 'Libs' 139882359801568 warning] rasterScale: failed to load pixops library from /usr/lib/vmware//lib/libpixops.so.2.0.4/libpixops.so.2.0.4: /usr/lib/vmware//lib/libpixops.so.2.0.4/libpixops.so.2.0.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
I will be re-trying again on a different machine. For the previous one I changed over to VirtualBox...
OK; same results; at least I am consistent! :-?
I believe I will try a previous ( 1.0.8 ) version.
Thanks again,
LCB.

I have had exactly same problem on 7.04 2 months ago. I reinstalled today again, and again, no vmnet when doing ifconfig. I would really like to see solution to this problem. If anyone can help please let me if need more informations.
Check this thread as well

Did anyone ever figure this one out? I'm having a very similar issue with ubuntu 9.10 running vmware server 2.0 and an instance of Windows 2003.
The Bridge connection works under the eth0, but I get a private address 169.254.x.x using DHCP and entering a static IP does not allow me to receive any Bytes.
I added the ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000" with no success.
Any suggestions?
