View Full Version : Building a non-KDE Qt desktop?

I've done a mininal install now and again, and I noticed is that it's quite easy to make a gtk desktop without bringing in the whole Gnome desktop environment. One factor is that there are lot of gtk-apps for most tasks you need that aren't tied in with Gnome. This make it quite compatible with my own Open/Fluxbox systems.

Conversely, it appears to be very difficult with Qt without KDE. What does everyone else think? Has anyone had any success?

All you need is the KDE libraries for KDE apps to run. Same as gnome.

i'm doing close to it now with openbox. i'm using opera for a browser, vlc for music and movies, juffed for a text editor (when nano won't do), fsirc for irc chatter and qbriscola for fun. i still use thunar, gimp and gcolor2, but gtk-qt-engine forces some of the qt theming on them.

someone on the arch forums started a thread about the same and listed off a huge amount of non-kde qt apps - http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56278
i've tried a bunch of them and a lot are kind of a pain to get installed, or use.

here's another thread, too - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1016165

Almost all those appps have gtk equivalents only some may not work as well as their gtk counterparts.

Thank you for linking to that thread. It mentions quite some interesting apps I had not heard of before. I've also added a few to the list on the Arch forums.

i think the op is just looking to see if it's possible to do an all non-kde qt setup.

Jumping in here because this is something I am interested in.

I don't like GNOME, and - at least for now - KDE 4 is too broken to be serious option. So, I'm mostly using XFCE.

I've often longed for a non-KDE QT-based DE.
