View Full Version : Xubuntu Logo: Which one should be official?

I've seen several logo designs for Xubuntu at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XubuntuArtwork , but was one specific one ever chosen to be the official logo?

I was just wondering -- which ones do you all like? Here are the current logos made:

First design:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XubuntuArtwork?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=xubuntu_logo.png

It also has an animated version...
http://lehrer.schule.at/goell-pregesbauer//wp-content/xubuntu_logo_suggestion_3.gif

While the running mouse is a fun idea, the color scheme is, in my opinion, too close to Kubuntu's, and I think that it should be more distinctive. Also, at small resolutions, the mouse becomes hard to discern.

Viper 550's idea:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XubuntuArtwork?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=xubuntulogo2.png

The color scheme is more distinctive than the first one, but it seems dull to me. While the X's are a good idea, they are so small and thin that they disappear at low resolutions, and they just aren't noticeable, I say. At small sizes, this logo ends up being nothing more than a greyscale version of the original Ubuntu logo.

AbelChiaro's idea:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XubuntuArtwork?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=xubuntumice.png

I personally don't like the mouse-head implementation, since it seems to lessen from the "humanity" point of *ubuntu, and the mouse face details are too complex and run into each other at small sizes. It also feels a bit too "cutesy."

This is my favorite:
Derick's idea:
http://penguin.agrid.usm.edu/~deisenhardt/xubuntu_x-circle.png

This one has the best features, I say. It has a distinctive color scheme that seperates it from the other *ubuntus. It is simple, easy to recognize, connected to the other *ubuntu logos shape-wise, and scalable.

EDIT: I thought that I would, as a matter of comparison, show each logo at 1/8th their original size, to see how they look when used in various ways. In fact, they may even be smaller with some (for example, the Ubuntu "start button" is smaller than the images here):

http://img489.imageshack.us/img489/7498/xubuntulogosmall1bh.png[/img]http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/4226/xubuntulogo2small0lj.pnghttp://img381.imageshack.us/img381/2599/xubuntumicesmall0wm.png[img]http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/9513/xubuntuxcirclesmall7ue.png

What are your thoughts? Which logo is best?

EDIT: endersshadow made a new design:

I've liked the first idea since my initial sighting of it. Plus, it incorporates the XFCE logo quite well.

Derick's is great. I like the colours and it is distinctively conncted to the other ibuntu logos.

I like the first logo alot, but what if a different color scheme was used, perhaps the one in dericks idea?

The blue looks too much like Kubuntu, perhaps greyscale blue would be much better.

Derick.

If you rotated Derick's just a bit so that the heads formed an X, it'd be perfect.

Edit: Added attachment.

I agree with you. The mouse is pretty cool, and would make xubuntu logo more distintive. The colours of it are too bright, so a combination with the last logo's colours, and the mouse inside would be the nicest one, I think.

Besides, having a critter implies more that this distribution takes less memory to use than the others, or something...

The first design. It is elegant and convenient. Anyone who remembers the Ubuntu logo and the XFCE logo will recognize that it is a combination of the two. Plus, I like the mouse :P

At a small scale, the last design could be mistaken for the Kubuntu logo.

P.S. It's probably not best to say "This is my favorite" when you host a poll. You could create some bias.

I like Derick's idea the most, but it has four sections instead of the common three. The first design with the mouse in the center is nice, but it advertises that people are embracing a mouse. None of them really stand out all that well, but those would be my choices out of the four.

I didn't think about that, but you are right.

A lot of people migrate from Ubuntu to Xubuntu to get a speedier setup (and/or a setup that will run on an older machine.)

Hooray for da mouse.

I've kept playing because, hey, that's what I do. I took the first one, enlarged the mouse (no idea why it's so damned small on it), and then applied Derick's colors to it. I think it turned out well, and it's very distinguishable at a small scale. Check it out:

Agreed. That blue just seems way too bright and shiny for a DE that's light weight and anything but bright and shiny. I really liked Derick's shades, but really didn't like the way the four heads looked...it just seemed to be moving away from the *ubuntu style. On the banner, though, I placed xubuntu closer to the logo than in the ubuntu and kubuntu logos because, if you look, the circle and the x form to make a pretty freaking cool arrow. Not going to lie, I stole the idea from FedEx. But, my point is that it implies speed and lightweight (mouse with an arrow -->...gotta love subliminal messages), and that's really what XFCE and Xubuntu is all about.

Plus, I'm lobbying because it'd be really cool to have my logo be used as the official logo...heh...

You will have to submit it on the offical ubuntu site then http://www.ubuntulinux.org/community/participate#artwork (yet they link to the forums so maybe you can do it here confirm/deny?)

Thanks. It appears I've gotta go on IRC and pitch my gig. Unfortunately, my university has blocked IRC because people are too stupid to secure their computers...so, I'll have to do it when I'm home. But thanks for the info!

Great design, endersshadow! With the new color scheme, it looks much better overall...I'd even say I like this more than Derick's design right now.

I'll go ahead and add it to the first post.

Haha, I used Inkscape. I needed to do it vector based, but I do use the GIMP for all my raster image needs. Logos just tend to be made better in Inkscape, as you can scale them and they're always sharp.

Besides, what kind of Ubuntu guy would I be if I didn't only use OSS?

Edit: Also just wanted to say thank you for your support...honestly, I never think my work is that good heh...

Another Edit: If you'd like some of my other work (made in the GIMP), go here (http://photobucket.com/albums/c390/endersshadow7/)

The middle logo in this graphic is also really good:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/XubuntuArtwork?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=xbuntu_x.png

It's very consistant with the Ubuntu look, and it is also distinct because it is green and clues to XFCE with an obvious "X."

They are all good images.
I'd go for any of them, except the one with four parts.
As I think it should have three like the actual Ubuntu logo.

I liked the endersshadow logo...
it looks like the orignal but the color scheme is way better..
and you could do the animation because it is funny and cool to have
as a mouse wait instead of the clock or the sand thingie...

Okay, I got preoccupied by the Bruins and pizza. Bruins won! Woohoo!

Here's the cursor sized one:

And a larger one for kicks and giggles:

This was my first go at animation in the GIMP, so if anybody else can do a better job, the SVG is on the Wiki, and have a go at it!

someone needs to slow that thing down or the mouse's gonna die... :) Seriously though, turns too fast...

first logo with Derick's colors is very nice (as long as the mouse in it is not squished by gravity) mouse adds cute-ness :)

Haha. Probably, but I'm an RA and I was on duty tonight, so what was I going to do? Like I said, I watched the Bruins beat the Wild, and then I did this...

As for it moving too fast, it looked weird when it was moving slower...I'd have to add about twice the number of frames for it to look decent...and I was too lazy to do that...heh...besides, it implies XFCE is faaaaaaaaast, which it is :-D

I voted on Derick's idea of Logo. It has few thing which logo have to has:
1. it's simple
2. it's clear with X sign
3. It looks good big, small, mono or colored (ideas with mice isnt good visible as a small icon)

It would be great to see it in xubuntu.

That's a good point.

Personally, I wouldn't mind it if they changed the colors. It's kind of a faded purple from the cover of a 70's Teach Yourself Piano book...in my professional art sense :-P

Green is the best. The human-color logo's colors are already taken (...by Ubuntu.)

Then again, the purple color is closer to the XFCE4 default theme than green.

nah sorry, it's too easy to confuse that with X-windows "X"... it just has to be the XFCE mouse... nothing else will do.
