Hi everyone. This is not what one may call a pressing issue, but its something I need for a future project I have planned.

I was wondering:

How many stable, good File Browsers are out there for gnu/linux
Which are "the best" (robustness, size, features, cool effects, etc)
Which one do you use.

If you know of ANY other file browsers beside what I know, I would appreciate if you give me at least a name. If you don't mind, a link to their homepage, some cool features you like about it, etc; would be awesome. Any details or statistics worthy of mentioning-- good or bad.

Right now, i know of:
Nautilus (http://projects.gnome.org/nautilus/) [wiki] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nautilus_%28file_manager%29) (I like the location bar and the fact that you can sample music just by hovering over a soundfile).
Konqueror (http://konqueror.kde.org/) [wiki] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konqueror) (all i know is that its also a web browser)
Dolphin (http://dolphin.kde.org/) [wiki] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolphin_%28software%29) (it replaced Konqueror as default on KDE)
Thunar (http://%28that%20it%20replaced%20Knoqueror%20not%20to%20l ong%20ago%20as%20the%20default%20in%20kubuntu...if %20I%20remember%20reading%20correctly%29.%3Cbr%20/%3E%0A%5Burl=http://thunar.xfce.org/index.html) [wiki] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunar) (default to XFCE)

EDIT: The following were mentioned by others withi this thread. Im adding them here to make it easier to see a more complete list
PCMan File Manager (http://pcmanfm.sourceforge.net/) [wiki] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCManFM) (default to LXDE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LXDE))
ROX-Filer (http://roscidus.com/desktop/ROX-Filer) [wiki] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rox-filer) (replaced by Thunar)
Midnight Commander (MC) (http://www.ibiblio.org/mc/) [wiki] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_commander) (cross platform, Norton Commander clone. 2 pane "old school" style)
Krusader (http://krusader.org/) [wiki] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krusader) (2 pane, like MC. Written to match KDE. Newer UI)
Gnome Commander (GCMD) (http://www.nongnu.org/gcmd/) [wiki] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNOME_Commander) (2 pane. Similar to Krusader)

I'm sure there are hundreds more, and if you don't mind, help me compile a list of them, or if there is a list, direct me to it. I'm sure others can benefit from this thread

This is all I could find on Wikipedia about file manager comparison (includes other platforms)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_managers

Thanks

There's pcmanfm, used by lxde
And rox-filer, which is popular in the minimalist window manager circles.

Midnight commander is an old-school dual-pane file manager for those who remember Norton commander.

There's a bunch more, but those are the ones I've tried.

Not exactly robust or even practical, but cool to mess wtih :-

http://www.determinate.net/webdata/seg/tdfsb.html

It will only allow you to look about and play audio & video files, but +1 on the cool front.

Another cool file manager is Eagle Mode found here :-

http://eaglemode.sourceforge.net/index.html

It is built on pearl and works really well - very quick when you consider what it is doing.

One I like is "lfm" (CLI), available in the usual repos. It is the closest thing to "list" (MSDOS) I have ever found.

XFE is another lightweight option: http://roland65.free.fr/xfe/

Since you asked...

As minimalist options, I like:

ROX for its ability to manage an entire desktop simply, but dislike the single-click to open (too long in Windows - hence double-click comes naturally now).
Thunar for its: plugins (e.g. volman etc - allows a complete fully-featured manager if necessary); the "open terminal here" right-click menu; the "you are root warning" when browsing as root.
PCManFM for its tabs (and similarity to Thunar).

Unfortunately, they all fall down when it comes to network browsing. For this single reason, I stick with Gnome / nautilus.

PS: ROX was not replaced by Thunar. xftree was the original xfce browser - not sure what happened to it. ROX is alive and well.

Ahem

Turning the single click to open option on or off in Rox is as easy as ticking a box.

Literally.

Rox can also open a terminal in a folder (`) and it has a handy shell option (!)

I stand corrected :-#

I haven't used ROX for about 2 years now, and never really experimented much with it.

Since then, when looking for a lightweight desktop more recently, I found the ROX desktop project (which intrigued me - I used RiscOS when at school on the Acorn Archimedes), but it is not available in any Ubuntu repo, so I settled on LXDE instead.

Rox filer is part of the rox desktop project (as is RoxTerm ans zeroinstall-injector: Which are also in the repos).

To get the Rox desktop you just run rox with --session or -S. To have Rox actually manage your session you need to download rox-session from here (http://www.roscidus.com/desktop/software/). It's available as a tarball or a 0install package.
