View Full Version : Open AP, Secure network?

There's all this talk about securing your wireless access point with WEP, WPA, or whatever. But, I don't care if people connect to my access point, unless:
1) They hog all the bandwidth (easy solution: ban them) OR
2) They steal my identity or commit some other nefarious deed
So, I'm asking for some advice. What precautions can/should I take to protect myself against number 2 above if I keep my AP open? Is there no way I can be completely safe?
I would appreciate any suggestions.
Thanks,
Brad

I agree with bjweeks that you shouldn't leave an open AP since people can use it for illegal things. Otherwise don't do anything you want to be kept private over wireless, generally speaking the AP will switch your connections so they can't just eavesdrop with ethereal or something on your wired side (although most likely possible if determined but in that case securing wi-fi won't help). In general whether your encrypt or not you should not do private things over the radio even if not decoded right away the captured packets can be decoded later on leaving you vulnerable to identity theft.
