View Full Version : [xubuntu] Upgrade to 8.10: hard disk space

I want to upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10. The upgrade via update-manager fails with:
Not enough free disk space
... needs 1270M free disk space on '/', please free additional 53.9M ...

I tried to remove openoffice (sudo apt-get remove openoffice.org-core), freeing an additional 192M. But now if I try to upgrade, it tells me I need 1836M free disk space on '/'.
How much space do I really need? Why do I need almost 600M more free space if I uninstall openoffice?

Thank you for your help!

Why not do a fresh install?

Also you could follow my tips for freeing up space.

Why not do a fresh install?
So far I ended up doing a fresh install for every new version of Ubuntu, because the upgrade never worked. However, I never know what packages I'm still missing, it takes a couple of days until I use all programms I typically need. And I don't always have an internet connection, so it would be nice just to upgrade everything and have everything installed. Also I end up copying config-files (in /etc) from my backup for many, many applications. Would be nice just to upgrade ...

well, you write you saved about 160MB, I need to free about 450MB. Also I tried what you suggest by removing Openoffice, only to find that now I need even more free space.
