Total Linux noob here, trying to set up my old Compaq Presario 5410US (1.2GHz Celeron, 256MB RAM) to dual-boot ubuntu with the existing XP Home (I would go all ubuntu on this machine if I was confident I could get it to work). I downloaded the 8.04 live CD, and it checks OK using the verification option. I had a ton of crap on XP, but tried to clean up a lot of it and ran defrag on the C: (about 33GB NTFS) and D: (about 4GB) partitions. I can run ubuntu off the live CD, although it's painfully slow.
When I try to run the installation, I get to the "Starting up the Partitioner" screen, and it will get to about 53% on "Scanning disks..." then seems to chug away (alternating CD and hard disk) indefinitely with no progress. Eventually the monitor goes dark and won't wake up (disks still chugging) by moving the mouse or hitting the Alt or other keys. After a few hours I just held the power button to reboot. It hung up at the same point during the second try. Any ideas?
