so, every now and then, I find that I have to do a

killall pulseaudio
in order to get my sound to work. The audio will just die, but that command repairs it.

Also, for some reason, my headphone jack is not doing anything at all. I've tried the classic

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
and adding lines to alsa-base, but that does nothing, as far as I can tell.

Is there something I've missed, or have I been doing something the wrong way?

also, even though I have sound, this happens with the pulseaudio command:
