The best ones recently, in my opinion, were Code Geass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_geass) and Gundam 00 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gundam_00).

In Code Geass, Japan was conquered by Britannia (basically, imagine Britain's colonial period never ended,) and renamed Area 11. Years later, a high school student acquires the power to give orders that cannot be disobeyed, and puts his plan to destroy Britannia in high gear.

Gundam 00 is your standard giant-mecha show that we've all come to love from the Gundam franchise, and I think is the best one I've seen since Wing Gundam.

Going a bit further back, Spice and Wolf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spice_and_Wolf) is also excellent, and if you haven't seen Slayers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slayers)...

All time? Mazinger Z, Saint Seiya, Gatchaman, Rurouni Kenshin, Space Cobra, Samurai Champloo, Evangelion, Gundam Wing.

Movies? Sword of The Stranger, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Cowboy Beebop, Gundam Wing Endless Waltz.

This year I'd have to say Code Geass R2, Casshern Sins and Xam'd.

Samurai Champloo
Afro Samurai
Bleach
Darker Than Black
Ergo Proxy

FLCL
Code Geass
Now and Then, Here and There
Gundam Seed
Gundam Seed: Destiny
Gundam 00
Black Lagoon

Serial Experiments Lain
Ghost In The Shell
Blood Plus
A few others as well but I can't think of them off the top of my head right now. :D

Most of them I enjoyed, but FLCL and Code Geass weren't to great in my opinion. Still, I watched them through the entire series so I guess they has some charm to them. :)

I wouldn't say I'm a huge anime fan - i've quite disliked most of the stuff I've seen, however popular it may have been (FMA was a waste of several hours of my life).

That said, there's been a few series I'm particularly fond of:

The Vision of Escaflowne - girl meets boy, boy kills dragon, girl and boy get 'beamed' to another world called Gaia filled with animal people and warring kingdoms. Classic story, really. :p

Escaflowne's strengths were it's art direction, it's soundtrack (Yoko Kanno and Maaya Sakamoto's first collaboration), it's use but not abuse of CGI; it's use but not abuse of mechas (steam-powered, to be sure) and it's strong inter-weaving plotlines and strong array of characters with equally well-thought-out interactions.

Don't be put off by the fact that it's target audience was female (a fact I became embarrassingly aware of watching the DVD extras).

English dubs are abysmal. Watch this show in Japanese with subtitles or don't watch it at all.

*****

Cowboy Bebop - despite rather arrogantly asserting itself as the harbinger of a new genre, this is a really stand-out programme. Rarely serious or requiring much attention span, this show is a constant mesh of cinematic styles, plot conventions and outlandish escapades.

Cowboy Bebop doesn't pretend to be deep - just sophisticated, fast and fun. Only non-anime films/shows I can think of to compare it's pacing to are the films Crank and Shoot 'em Up. Yoko Kanno, again as music director, draws heavily upon the jazz, swing and motown movements for the series' soundtrack, which is stunning. Visual style is unpretentious, with plenty of dramatic-looking characters and slapstick-fight scenes.

Only weaknesses were Spike's main antagonist - Vicious, who is a cliché of enormous proportions and the film, who's first few movements were exceedingly slow.

English dubs are exceptional.

*****

Trigun - You know how with every iconic television series, there was at least one similar programme riding on it's coat tails? Yeah well Trigun very much rode Cowboy Bebop's coat tails.

Arguably a bit more grown-up than Bebop, Trigun is the story of a futuristic gun-slinger outlaw, intersected with flashbacks to his amnesiac past, elaborating upon how humanity came to be stranded on an alien desert world a century or so earlier.

Assisting our protagonist are two women from an insurance company, who take entirely too long to figure out that the red-coat wearing goofball they keep bumping into is the outlaw who owes their company a huge debt. The other major member of the cast is Wolfwood; a, "preacher", of dubious origin who is handy with a gun and unashamedly opportunistic.

Most episodes are standalone stories but there is a main plot arch, which they get around to eventually.

English dubs are okay - Vash, the main protagonist, is played far too seriously by his English voice actor but they're otherwise fine.

****

Samurai Champloo - Quite seriously about the only anime made this side of the millennium that I think I've liked.

Follows Fuu, Mugen and Jin as they seek out, "the samurai who smells of sunflowers". Has a similar road-trip-with-random-bad-guys format and feel to Trigun but with the most eclectic artistic direction I've ever seen. They make no secret of it, either, with veiled references to famous artists. One of the highlights was when Mugen set a marijuana crop on fire and everything went, "pop-art".

Also draws heavily on American black hip-hop culture, which I'm guessing has finally found it's way to the not-so-humble shores of Japan. This I wasn't so fond of. Although I have no problem with rap (Terra Firma > your favourite rap group), classic art and rap do not a good combination make.

The show's greatest strength is that it was directed by the same brain behind Cowboy Bebop so expect lots of off-beat samurai action and some genuine attempts to make the individual character's backstories interesting.

English dubs I wasn't fond of. Not so much bad as just unable to capture the magic of the Japanese cast voicework.

****

I've seen a bunch of others, including but not limited to: Love Hina (***), Elfen Lied (****) Claymore (**), Black Lagoon (*), FMA (*), GitS:SAC (***) but I can't really be effed writing out my thoughts on each, or providing much of a description. Also seen a bunch of films: GitS (*****), Akira (**), Jin Roh (***), Ninja Scroll (****), Blood: The Last Vampire (***) but again, I'm getting lazy now.

One of my overall favorites is Keroro Gunso (aka Sgt. Frog).

For those of you that don't know about it, it's an anime that's pretty much popular everywhere but the US (which is one of the few places not to air it, though it's coming here, but they're being stupid and changing names and stuff). The plot's about a team of aliens (that look kinda like frogs) who want to conquer Earth, get discovered by a family of humans (who they call "Pekopons") and are hiding with them, and their plots to take over Earth (which they call "Pekopon"). It's really good, I highly recommend it, especially if you're a Gundam fan.

I also love Bobobo. Though a lot of people I know hate it and keep telling me how stupid (that's the point!) they think it is.

Another I liked that I watched about a year ago was one that was an adaptation of one of those visual novel things called "Shuffle", and yes, I know it's perverted.

I know I'm probably not the first to ask this, but is it me, or does this kinda look like Goku?

The Ghost in the Shell series is awesome in my opinion. Yeah sure there's a lot of talk going on, and they're doing the department-juggle a lot of the time. But once you start to get a grasp of the structure, it's all good. I'd watch it again just for the Tachikomas.

It's not so much that there's a lot of talk - it's what they talk about. It's some of the most obtuse techno babble since Star Trek and the kind of philosophical insight you'd expect from an angsty teen.

As I said earlier, eastern (i.e. Japanese) story-telling seems to focus on actions and activities, and not on plot. I wish I had better "industry" terms to use than this, but I don't.

To my mind, most anime, in terms of "story" content, really doesn't make any sense to me. Ok, I get the general concept of "There's good guys, and they're doing their thing; and then there's bad guys who are doing bad stuff, and the good guys fight the bad guys; and then hopefully the good guys win, but there will be some kind of cost." But what the specifics of their motivation are, why they do what they do, the fact that there's this predilection with the technology or the coolness or the wow factor, and that it seems like that is almost more important than the plot... that is all a massive turn-off to me.

Don't get me wrong, I love the art style of anime. But I'm not willing to spend my money (or time) on something which on the whole I don't find entertaining.

etnlIcarus
March 24th, 2009, 07:24 AM
Kind of agree. The difference I notice in story telling (not exclusively to anime) is the plot tends to require you to 'fill in the gaps'. It's sort of at the opposite end of the spectrum to western story telling; books and films tend to be verbose and overly explicit, dwelling on formalities and leaving very little to the imagination. In that way quite a bit of Eastern cinema tends to cut a swath through the first few proverbial chapters, often to the detriment of character or us 'westies' understanding what the hell is going on.

Edit: I think also notable are the traditions of Eastern story telling, with much folklore, mythology and a pantheon of abstract god and demons to draw upon (plus melodrama in generous proportions). Western civilization had it's Plunkets, Lovecrafts and Tolkiens but for the last century, have been less prevalent than the Stokers, Shellys and Romeros. I remember the first Final Fantasy film really exemplifying the different expectations of east/west audiences, with many bemused faces surrounding me in the cinema*.

*same thing happened the other week when I saw Watchmen, interestingly enough.

I like some Anime, but I prefer to read Manga.

Manga (Japanese Comics") provides more in-dept story than Anime.
Most Anime comes from Manga, but since they have limited amount of time in which it can air, many stuff gets cut or simplified.

To you people who are unsatisfied because of that, I recommend you to read Manga instead.

You're not reading into the anime enough if you're not getting much out of it.
3/4s of every single thing that happens in most anime is a metaphor for something else. Except in longer running shows like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, etc (because most of those shows are just filler).

Here's an example of what I mean. If you've seen Geass, you might have just dismissed this scene as them playing chess, but here's a more in-depth explanation of the entire thing (or a tleast as much as the subbers could fit on screen LOL).
http://i138.photobucket.com/albums/q245/Zephyr6831/1226011491592.jpg

Also, if anyone asks, I have not watched Geass yet (stuck at 96.7% downloading, and I'm too lazy to find a new batch), so I cannot comment much more than this.

3/4s of every single thing that happens in most anime is a metaphor for something else.Frankly, I think if you're finding a lot of metaphor (3/4, at least), you're reading too far into what you're watching. The shot you provided actually demonstrates my point: one person gets lost in exploring the nuances of chess, the next person explains the illegal move as the character being coy and cute towards a love interest and the previous explanation just looks dumb by comparison.

Speaking of Geass, it's yaoi? Hot girly-man on girly-man action or just lots of PG-rated flirty crap?

Samurai Champloo (series) and Ninja Scroll (film) come to mind. Personally, I didn't get much out of Rurouni Kenshin (or Samurai X, as it was known here). I'd also suggest branching out a bit to some stuff that takes itself less seriously and has a little more artistic spirit. Samurai Champloo fits that bill pretty well, actually.

I'm not that much of an anime fan, but I do enjoy watching it.
The only anime DVDs I've bought, are:

Trigun: by far the best anime ever made, imo. I have yet to read the manga though.
Wonderful Days: There's something about the trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gVWY19wQ2U) that just appealed to me.

My brother is quite the anime/manga freak, and has a big collection. Berserk is one of his favorites, along with the Dragonball series (which we watched since we were little kids). Dragonball GT is a big disappointment though...

Saint Seiya (Knights of the Zodiac) looked really cool when we were little, but I think we've outgrown it :D
Trigun is a very good anime. It didn't follow the manga too closely, but it actually turned out better than the manga that finished in 2007 did. I'm highly anticipating the movie, Trigun X. The plot is supposed to follow the manga, and it has been confirmed Wolfwood has a staring role. :)

Currently watching season 2 of Hajime No Ippo which is also very good.

as far as anime/manga comparisons go, i think the animated version of Naruto went to crap a long time ago but the manga still rocks, read it every week. and while i love Fullmetal Alchemist, the manga is still so much better (new show next month!!). still havent finished reading Death Note though

Frankly, I think if you're finding a lot of metaphor (3/4, at least), you're reading too far into what you're watching. The shot you provided actually demonstrates my point: one person gets lost in exploring the nuances of chess, the next person explains the illegal move as the character being coy and cute towards a love interest and the previous explanation just looks dumb by comparison.
Which is why they put it in.
Different people will get different things out of a show, depending on how much they pay attention to detail and how educated they are on certain things.

The same thing can be said about Hollywood movies as well. Most people won't actually pick up on stuff unless they've taken a class on Cinematics or Video Production (or some other similar class) though.

Question: what's the supposed connection between Trigun and ...Gungrave, was it?

Yasuhiro Nightow?
He created the Trigun manga, and the characters for Gungrave.

I used to have links and sources, unfortunately I don't have them anymore. They were lost with my laptop. I'd have to dig around the Internet for a half hour to find these old sites. I remember reading that the movie is supposed to revolve around Vash vs. Wolfwood. Going by that, I'd say it's probably going to be a reimaging of their encounters, in movie format. Rumors state that the film is supposed to follow the manga more closely. I kind of wish they would make a new season closer to the manga, like what FMA is doing right now. It would be interesting.

Question: what's the supposed connection between Trigun and ...Gungrave, was it?
Same creator, and apparently the black cat that makes an appearance in all the Trigun episodes also cameo in one of the Gungrave episodes.

Higurashi is awesome, but you need to watch both seasons to get the full picture. It's kinda like Groundhog Day with killer-lolitas, very nightmarish.

Higurashi is very good. the plot runs very thick, therefore it takes some time to wrap your head around it, but as long as you like ubergore and ultra-moe on top of each other...why not. and both seasons are necessary to get the proper ending.

Higurashi really is awesome. I'm at episode 7 at the moment. Up until ep 3 I was thinking "Ok, pretty normal, nothing special"... then episode 4 was "omgwtf". :)

But no spoilers please, or I will send killer-lolitas after you!

The same thing can be said about Hollywood movies as well. It's not that there aren't metaphors or easter eggs, it's the people actually writing and animating this stuff; I think you're grossly overestimating the average film maker/animator/whatever as an artist. Plus Occam's Razor applies here as much as it does anywhere.

Studio Ghibli was my intro to anime, i think i watched six of Miyazaki's films in a week after i discovered Spirited Away. those are still the films i love to rewatch every so often

also as an example of a very well done but serious anime film i reccomend Perfect Blue (oh shut up) to everybody ready for a good psychothriller.

Another prime example of what I'm trying to say is "Ergo Proxy."
*possible spoiler warning*
On one level, it's a cool story about a detective in a post-apocalyptic future, very similar to Blade Runner. But on a different level, it's a total philosophical and psychological mind-****.
Even the name itself hints at that:
"Ergo" is a Latin word, meaning "therefore" or some would even say "to be."
"Proxy" is a person acting on behalf of someone else. Some could simplify is down to "not to be."
Thus, we get "to be, or not to be" as a rough translation of the name.

Now let's look at some of the character names in the show:
Husserl, Kristeva, Derrida, Berkeley, Deleuze and Guattari.
All philosophers (look them up).

The Cogito Virus that starts to infect the AutoReivs refers to "Cogito ergo sum" (I think, therefore I am), by Descartes.

When the cloned Lil (depending on who you get your subs from... the main character anyways) dies in front of Daedalus, that's a reference to the myth of Daedalus and Icarus.

Also, the entire society inside Romdo is based on Plato's ideal society, where the philosphers watch over the city and decide what's best for it, which would include controlling what information is released to the public.

I'm just going to try and point out where we're diverging into different arguments, here.
You're not reading into the anime enough if you're not getting much out of it.
3/4s of every single thing that happens in most anime is a metaphor for something else. Except in longer running shows like One Piece, Naruto, Bleach, etc (because most of those shows are just filler).

Frankly, I think if you're finding a lot of metaphor (3/4, at least), you're reading too far into what you're watching. I'm not saying you're wrong about any one single anime (and lets be honest, very few anime series are as high concept as Ergo Proxy).

Ever since going to uni I have realised how popular Anime is as a whole, what with lots of societies devoting themselves to it.
However I'm struggling to see the appeal in one particular aspect of it.
The Still Art some of it is spectacular, attention to detail is unbelievable. so, being an avid Artist myself, i can appreciate that.
However
The actual animation is where it loses me. The animation is well interesting, its like watching a still frame movie, or a series of gif's. And the sound, well the least said the better.
I have only watched Spirited away, and i quite enjoyed that i must admit :)

I just realized the same thing about the animation. Huge portions of the time it is just a still image with a moving lips for the dialog. Or fighting scenes that include a lot of still images with some "wooshing" sound to appear as super-duper-movement-hyper-power attack.

What I personally like:
- Stories. There are many original ones. I think the medium really gives the creators the ability to go pretty wild with the story telling. Something that is not easily achievable by live action movies.
- Interesting/cute characters. (Although there are heaps of stereotypes that get reused alot. Case in point: Ayanami Rei-type characters are very common and that annoys me alot. Shows how some writers are very lazy. Also, alot of the characters are pretty childish and one-dimensional.)
- The setting of the story. It is easier to create (for example) a fantasy anime than a fantasy live-action, budget-wise. The artist has more freedom on the costumes, sets, creatures and so on. Of course the result is not as good, but we get more for less.
- Anime is somewhat more succinct. An interesting story can be told in 25 episodes. But look what happened to Heroes: "oh, lets stretch it to 4 season to suck more money from the viewer", and now it's going nowhere fast.
- Fan-created content. Oh yeah.

And there is a bigger list of things I don't like about anime, but an episode just finished downloading, so I gotta go. :)

That's a very stereotypical view of anime. I mean yes, there's tons of crap anime where it's just "a vs b, b beats a, a trains and gets stronger, a humiliates b, a and b become friends" or something of that sort. I do my best to avoid such titles. If you want something with a proper plot, take a look at all of Key's and Makoto Shinkai's anime.

There are too many good ones, so take a look here (http://supersonicdarky.sytes.net/~kernel/list.html) for something to watch.

I personally would like to see more "serious" anime.

I mean i love good anime, but i hate childish cartoons.

I can think of many anime series where the storyline and the animation and everything is perfect but the show gets ruined by stupid little childish remarks and high pitched giggles.
(I dont know if its some japaneese thing or what but its really the downfall of all good anime)

In my opinion, real anime should be about fables of love, and adventure, and heroics, where childish humor and stupid remarks should play no part.

For instance, I loved shows like cowboy bebop (despite the edd thing), but I absolutely despised shows like inuyasha and ruroni kenshin (uncle ken, uncle ken, hehe, hehe) and many others who just give anime a bad name.

My best example of childish things ruining a good anime would be trigun, in trigun everything was perfect except for the way that blond idiot was always whining and waving his arms around like a little girl (i think you know what im talking about)

Anime should be focused on a mature, intelligent audience, not 10 year old children.

Id say its probably the voices that ruin good anime the most, even with the original japaneese dubbing most anime is just straight up aimed at younger audiences.

Also in alot of anime it often feels like many of the artists know exactly what I like, but then the people who do the voices come in and ruin everything.

Anyway thats just my opinion, sorry if i offended anyone

That's how I feel, as well. But keep in mind that some of the anime is aimed at a younger audience, even at little kids. It's our role to pick what suits our age.
To add, two more things that really ruin anime for me is pointless fan-service and forced attempts at stupid humor.

You can usually find the DVD for fairly cheap, $20-25 on Amazon.

I vacillate wildly. I'll find something that really hooks me for a while, then the well will run dry for some months till it happens again.

My biggest problem is that I'm not a huge action genre fan, but prefer sports, comedy, and romance in that order. Action anime have to be absolutely stunning, visually and plot-wise (of the Guyver or Akira ilk), to grab me.

Right not I'm watching later episodes of Eyeshield 21, though I did just get Rurouni Kenshin and Planetes, so there's some backlog.

Far too many to list.
I really like the just plain strange ones: welcome to the NHK, paranoia agent, Pani Poni, Zetsuobou sensei, xxxHolic/Tsubasa Chronicles, .Hack://, mushishi, haruhi suzumiya, FLCL (much better with subs), Excel saga, DNA^2, HimekoX, mandaba style, etc.

I am recently tending toward ecchi comedies (the good ones anyway, and theres always a new one every series). Love Hina is great (the manga is better tho). if i'm ever feeling down, Yumeria, Hand Maid Mai, or Aemeindayo usually put a smile on my face.

The classics are some of my favs: Tenchi, Slayers (thank goodness their making new slayers, and it Good!), Ranma, etc.

I like some of the more artistic tragedies like Habane Renmai, Mai Hime/Otome, Tsubasa Chronicles, this beautiful and terrible world, and a few others. Habane Renmai taught me that anything with ratings like that on ANN is worth watching, even if it sounds boring from the synopsis.

I like a lot of the shonen adventure sagas (naruto, bleach, GTO, kenichi, kenshin, kiba, etc ) but I find them too long anymore. I just don't have the focus to watch a 400 ep series any more, especially the on going ones, since i worry that I'll never get to see the end [like kenshin] (the negima manga is a perfect example of one that makes me worry).

I also don't really like it when anime takes itself too seriously (Reign, most anything with a mech, space imperial dramas, most of the vampire stuff, Rosario excepted).

@chilly bob FMA is one of my favorites, i like to cosplay Edward (yeah i'm actually a male ed cosplayer) and i have the hair to do it right. i made a movie ed costume for AnimeExpo this year too. I'm watching FMA:Brotherhood right now and i like it. it moves fast right now b/c it's all overlap with the first series but it'll diverge more towards the manga storyline soon.

This depends a lot on your tastes, so what follows is just a reflection of mine:

Mushishi: a beautiful and contemplative anime on a "western scientific method" approach on traditional spirit japanese folklore. Amazing graphics, great screenplay

Welcome to the NHK!: a mostly satirical social commentary anime on different modern problems afflicting japanese (and contemporary) society: you'll see shut-ins, depression, pyramidal scams, suicide, otakus, etc. All that while laughing your a** off, and occasionally shedding a tear or two.

Ghibli: most of Ghibli productions: Princess Mononoke, Spirited away, Castle in the sky, Nausicäa, Porco Rosso, Grave of the Fireflys. All classics.

Haibane Renmei: a peculiar and dream-like anime on a bunch of girls trying to find out who and where they are. Great character development.

Koi Kaze: a nice romantic anime of the type that could not have been made in the west, only in Japan.

Kaiba: a very adult and thoughtfull anime with a retro childlike artwork. Again, only possible coming from Japan.

Genshiken: satiric anime to know everything about otakus and anime in general.

Akira: another classic: an action movie served by beautiful art and animation, and a nice soundtrack. Mind blowing if you are into cyberpunk style of stories (yup, check out Lain, already mentioned).

Simoun: a science-fiction anime of the kind only japanese could think about. Very odd, but very good storytelling, if you hang on past the first episodes.

There are many, many more excellent animes, but if you see those you'll be hooked enough to find further information by yourself.

My number one recommendation for what you wanna watch if you want to be inspired to watch anime would be the AMV Hell series http://amvhell.com/ .

They're free to download (torrent), contains tonnes of clips from different animes stitched together in a comical fashion, with a list of the used content at the end. They contain lots of in-jokes that gives instant geek-gratification when discovered, all the while inspiring to watch more anime.

Really, it may sound lame to watch, but give it a try. You'll be ROFL'ing for hours, promise.

I'm conviced that Cowboy Bebop is the best introduction to anime for a western audience. There are still some anime-like things in there, strange humor and such, but it is toned down to concentrate on the characters and action.

Story is heart wrenching and interesting as well, Vicious is a good bad guy though cliched. It's really the only anime I can still watch these days, being a dragonball z/anything anime nut in my early teens, I can't really take the bad humor and quirkiness of anime these days. I can however, still watch Cowboy Bebop and enjoy it

I really recommend you guys watch Ga-Rei Zero. Finished it few days ago and it instantly entered my top favorites list.
If you read in Wikipedia about Ga-Rei, it looks like a cliché-ridden shounen. That is actually what the Ga-Rei manga is. Ga-Rei Zero on the other hand, which is sort of an anime prequel, is superior to the manga. All the fighting-demons-with-magical-katanas (which I don't really like) is only a background to the beautiful story of the friendship between the main heroines Yomi and Kagura.
The first episode may leave you in a WTF state, the following episodes may be slow, but the last third makes this amazing series worth the time. (it's only 12 episodes long)

Forgot Spice and Wolf II, how could I, the first season became my favorite show. The current B/C of Haruhi has most fans P'O'd at animating the same thing, EIGHT times, I like watching it each week and noticing the subtle changes. it's still a surprise each week. As for FMA:Brotherhood i already see some changes, the show has skipped about three volumes of the manga, between Ed and Al visiting Izumi and the appearance of the Eastern Alchemists (Xing or Rentanjutsushi, whatever you want to call it). and it's moving fast still, hope it continues to be excellent though.

This thread got me to check out a few series.

I never been an anime fan aside from watching Mazinger Z & Robotech when I was younger, till I found this thread a while back.

I watched Deathnote, recommended to me by my brother in law. I really liked the series until M came into the scene... from that point on, I watched it but didn't like the series much...

Cowboy Beebop was fun. bought it and the movie.
Ghost in the Shell, by far my fav. Bought the 1st season and Movie. 2nd gig on back order :(. No surprise since I am a Matrix fan.
Samurai Champloo was fun as well, really enjoyed it. Will buy this series.
Code Geas R1 & R2, was not bad... didn't care for the ending much.
Afro Samurai... was OK. It got on my nerves more often than not. I don't know if I could watch it again though... I was a fan of Samuel Jackson until then... LOL

I've recently seen Haibane Renmei and Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence myself.

The former was actually good enough to become my favourite anime series of all time (knocking Cowboy Bebop, the leader for the last two years, down the second place), so it's definitely worth watching.

The latter now means I consider my viewing of the Ghost in the Shell franchise to be effectively complete (both Mamoru Oshii movies, both series of Stand Alone Complex and Solid State Society, and the complete manga), and I thought it was much better than most people give it credit for. Maybe not quite up to the quality of the legendary 1995 movie, but certainly worthy of it.

Dam, episode 18 of Umineko was awesome!

From the new season I'm watching The sacred blacksmith, Kampfer, Railgun, Sora no Otoshimono, Kobato.
It looks like a weak season to me. Or maybe I'm watching the wrong stuff? Kampfer maybe is my favorite.

Btw, I also dropped 11eyes and "Seitokai no Ichizon" for generic-ness. Amirite? (Ofc some of the other shows I picked instead are also generic. *coughthesacredblacksmithcough*)

Lets see, my favorites right now are: FLCL, Guren Lagann, Clannad, Lucky Star, Berserk, Code Geass (R2 was better than the first season IMO), Fullmetal Alchemist and Escaflowne. my favorite movies are: 5 centimeters per second, Armitage III, Ghost in the shell and Princess Mononoke. I read Naruto regularly but the anime has gotten bad i think.

I am with you Code Geass, ESCAFLONE, PRINCESS MONOKE( all caps because it was great and this is my excited voice)

The new series, yes. It has a few quirks, but it's pretty good I think. Compared to the first series there's more random fanservice and the main character is less likeable I think. It's quite some time since I saw the first series though, so perhaps I remember it wrong. YMMV.

Can't hurt to check it out.

Things I've Watched and Enjoyed:

Akira (a long time back though)
Berserk
Bleach
Cowboy Bebop
Death Note
Full Metal Alchemist (loved it)
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (loving it!!!)
Ghost in the Shell (another from the past)
Hellsing
Neon Genesis Evangelion (paid for the box set)
Ninja Scroll (way back - don't remember it)
Paranoia Agent (was weird)
Princess Mononoke
Rurouni Kenshin (was the longest, until I sat through Bleach)
Trigun
Vampire Hunter D (also way back, but I suppose I liked it)

I'm sure I am missing some though. As long as my list include FMA, Eva, Kenshin, and Trigun - then it covers the most important to me.

Its interesting to hear peoples opinions.. and to learn more about this medium of art and animation.

If anyone else has any opinions, it will be interesting to hear them, what draws (no pun intended) you to anime?

A more relevant question would be to ask anime-haters why they hate anime. Saying "I hate anime" is just like saying "I hate Spanish movies" or "I hate German novels". It's rejecting something on a purely arbitrary criterion, which has nothing to do with its actual content.

They really took the, "war is hell", formula to the extreme of utter nihilism.

You're really not going to find much that measures up to the likes of Bebop. Samurai Champloo by all accounts should have reached parity but still came up short. Starting with Elfen Lied is also making things difficult.

I personally never got into Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex (love the original film, though) or Ergo Proxy but if you're in a wanky mood, you might want to check them out. For more light-weight comedy/action series similar to Bebop, try Samurai Champloo (same director as Bebop, similarly eclectic, widely influenced style), or Trigun (great but you need to watch it in Japanese, with subs ; the English dubs don't convey the characters or the writers' sense of humour properly and juxtaposed against the action and drama, the whole thing ends up seeming Schizophrenic).

For something a bit different from all of the above (different in it's nominative sense; not different in, say, the way one might describe the Japanese in general) and for probably my personal favourite, check out a series called The Vision of Escaflowne. Again, you need to watch this adventure-fantasy series in Japanese, with subs, as the English dubs are ruinous. There's plenty of action but it takes on a more sobered tone than the balls-to-the-wall melodrama of Bebop and Trigun. Also focusses on it's characters a little more directly and as it's a fantasy story, don't expect the plot to make any literal sense. There's lots of gibberish about fate and free will, just... go with it.

The new darker than black was pretty amazing, I like their style of storytelling where every little detail is not spelled out. It's like they assume the watcher has some level of intelligence, which I appreciate. Looking forward to the OVA and hopefully a season 3. My two favourite studios for animation style would be BONES and Mangalobe.

I try to stay away from anything with teen and pre-teens in short skirts and fanservice. I find that aspect of anime culture very disturbing.

Staying away from teens (and younger) does have its downside:

My Neighbor Totoro (anything from Ghibli is going to involve kids)
Dennou Coil (exciting and sometimes scary adventure)
FLCL (probably the best Gainax series ever)
Higurashi (brilliant thriller)
Tokyo Magnitude 8 (the best show of this season)
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time (one of the best movies I've seen)

I could probably go on and on...
